Oak Furniture for the living room and bedroom
Furniture Traditions is a different kind of company. Long ago, we decided that smart consumers want furniture of exceptional quality and great design. For over 20 years, we’ve dedicated ourselves to filling those needs. We don’t make cheap oak furniture. That was not the goal when we started and is not the goal today. You should expect the best when Furniture Traditions is delivered to your home.
Why oak furniture?
Oak is the superb wood for any kind of furniture. Ask any woodcrafter, and they will tell you they love working with oak. Oak is incredibly hard, imbuing durability & longevity to any piece. It has a wonderful grain pattern; its surface can be sanded extremely smooth, and it accepts stains & lacquers better than most woods. Oak furniture that is hundreds of years old is just as beautiful as the day it was manufactured.
Since our inception, Furniture Traditions and the customers of our company have benefited from our business relationship with Kane Hardwoods. I’m not sure whether Kane Hardwoods is named after the city Kane, Pennsylvania or if the city is named after the best hardwood mill in America. But they are in the same place and have been for a very long time.
Why is it good for our customers that we only buy our northern red oak from the same long-term vendor? They know to deliver only high quality Oak, as we will not accept anything else. More importantly, getting all of our Oak from the same forest means our Oak doesn’t have the wide variety of “mineral streaks”, which occurs when wood comes from different soils. We expect our Oak furniture to be superb.
For the first time in print, I am giving out our secret to making great quality products: “You can’t make chicken soup out of chicken poop”. This quote is over 25 years old and can be directly attributed to Steve Ardis, my partner. We know we have to start with expensive and high quality raw materials to make great finished products. Our goal is to make great furniture and we mostly succeed.
Being green is a very old idea when it comes to our oak furniture — American made funiture using the best oak hardwoods from managed foreest. The Northern red oak we use comes from Kane Hardwoods’ managed forests in Pennsylvania. In fact, the trees that were re-planted in the early years of our company will soon be ready to become your treasured heirlooms.
So why don’t more furniture companies use Oak? Two words: greed & profits. As you know, Oak is a highly treasured wood, very much in demand by quality woodcrafters. As it’s a very durable hardwood, it takes expensive tooling to work it. As Oak is indigenous to North America, while most furniture manufacturing has gone to China or Vietnam, it’s expensive to transport overseas. For these reasons, it costs manufacturers more to use oak than other cheaper woods. Here at Furniture Traditions, we don’t sacrifice quality for profits.
I am proud to have Furniture Traditions’ oak furniture in my home.
